For the fourth consecutive year, Fenway Cares will be distributing Thanksgiving turkeys to the neighborhood. This year the organization has 140 turkeys to give away.
Fenway Cares is a collaborative organization between Audubon Circle, The Fenway Civic Association (FCA), The Fenway Alliance, The Fenway Community Center (FCC), The Fenway Community Development Corporation and Operation P.E.A.C.E. / Peterborough Senior Center.
The
idea to distribute donated turkeys came about when developer Samuels
and Associates approached the FCA with the idea during the pandemic in
2020 “as a way to support families during COVID.”
“While
we appreciated the offer, we felt that Fenway Cares would be a perfect
fit for a food-based outreach effort,” said Marie Fukuda, co-chair of
the Fenway Civic Association’s Parks and Open Space Committee.
Samuels and Associates has since continued to supply the turkeys and offers volunteers to help distribute them.
The
FCC will be open for pickup on November 20 between 10:30am and 1pm for
those who reserved a bird. Around 40 to 45 turkeys are being delivered
to residents with mobility issues.
In
addition to supplying turkey donations to the neighborhood, Fenway
Cares also hosts a bi-weekly donation known as “East and West Fens Free
Food Boxes” at the FCC and Symphony Community Park on alternating
Wednesdays.
The food boxes are given away every other Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30pm and include “fresh veggies, fruits, grains, and more.”
