Melons will give way to molecules in the near future at the Star Market on Boylston Street.

Fenway developer Samuels & Associates will soon file detailed plans for a 553,000 square foot building that will include R&D labs, associated offices and green space on the 2.4-acre lot that is currently occupied by the market and a deserted gas station.

Samuels had announced last March that Star would move across Boylston Street to a larger 50,000 square foot facility at 401 Park Drive.

The new building will enhance the area as an epicenter of Boston’s burgeoning life sciences sector with several buildings already occupied, under construction or proposed.

The site is near the Longwood Medical Area which for decades has been the country’s largest recipient of federal research dollars for life science research.
