A recently unveiled mural welcomes visitors to Seaport with a charming, thoughtful message. “Remember: Going through it is often how we get to the other side of it.”
The mural is by Cleo Wade, a New York Times bestselling author and poet. Wade has published five collections of poetry and short prose, which her website says “explore hope, resilience and the power of love.” This is her first public mural.
“Whenever I create public art, my great hope is that it can be the message someone stumbles across, that holds them for a brief moment,” Wade said in a statement announcing the mural. “We could all use a little support, a little love, in today’s world.”
Tucked under the overpass at I-90 and Congress Street, the sprawling 51-foot-by-17-foot mural features bold, brightly colored letters on a solid black background. The letters have a sense of whimsy, reminiscent of a magazine collage or magnetic letters on a refrigerator. They bring a feeling of hope and childlike wonder to the neighborhood’s entrance.
“Wade’s poetic words offer a consoling, inspiring voice amidst the chaos of modern life, urging viewers feeling overwhelmed or lost to return to the essence of love, particularly self-love, as a guiding force,” the description of the mural on Seaport’s tourism website states.
WS Development, the company behind the new 630,000-square-foot lab and retail complex at 400 Summer Street, reached out to Wade in 2023 to offer her the space for the mural. It was completed in July.
“When
we chose the spot for the mural, we wanted to make the most of its
location,” said Claire Kilcullen, Seaport’s associate director of
culture and experience. “The message really fits the experience of
driving through there and coming into Seaport, but it also speaks to the
everyday opportunities we all face.”
Wade’s mural sits right next to 400 Summer Street.
“We
were inspired by her work and thought it would be a great addition to
Seaport,” Kilcullen said. “Her words have a way of resonating with
people, and we wanted something that would capture that same spirit
here. We love how the mural adds a bit of inspiration and creativity to
everyone’s journey through the area.”
The
text of the mural is one entry in Wade’s latest book, Remember Love:
Words for Tender Times. The work features a collection of short prose
and poetry about overcoming heartbreak and motivating oneself to keep
moving forward. The mural’s poem is titled, “A Small & Mighty
Truth.”
“[The message] felt perfect for Seaport,” Kilcullen said. “It’s all about growth and what’s coming next.”
Seaport
is already home to numerous other public art installations. The murals
often feature the same bright colors and whimsical design as Wade’s,
with similar messages meant to inspire hope or self-reflection, like the
interactive “Dear Seaport” installation, or Ryan Adams’ “I Love You,
All of You” on Autumn Lane.
“Wade’s
mural is a powerful addition to Boston Seaport’s rich collection of
globally renowned public art installations,” Seaport’s website states.
