USA Today has nominated the Charles River Esplanade as one of America’s top riverwalks. But to be named one of this year’s “10 Best” in its “Readers’ Choice Travel Awards” program, more readers must vote for The Esplanade online. The Esplanade was ranked 11th last year.

Out of 20 cities chosen by a panel of USA Today editors and expert contributors, voters choose the “10 Best.”

Voters can click through the Web site (https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-riverwalk-2023/charles-river-esplanade-boston) to add a vote. You can cast a new vote every day until polls close, at noon on Monday, Feb. 6.

Maddy Segal, who lives in Beacon Hill, chuckled when she heard that her favorite riverwalk had been nominated.

“We love it here,” she said looking at her friend Audrey Pabian who also lives in Beacon Hill. “We get to talk, and walk and be together.” The two stroll along the river between Massachusetts Avenue and Charles Street a few times a week. The ponds, playgrounds, and winding pathways provide a scenic backdrop to their friendship. “There’s something different every day. It’s absolutely beautiful out here.”

With a community boat launch and boat house, concerts at the Hatch Shell, sailing lessons, 17 miles of running trails, and a 64-acre park, people have used the riverwalk to connect for decades. And it’s famous for the Boston Pops’s annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks spectacular.

“The whole city is nicely designed for commuters,” said Rene, a logistics manager from Norway who incorporated the Esplanade into his walking commute from Back Bay to where he works in Cambridge. “There’s lots of greenery on Boston’s side of the Charles, so you hardly notice the cars,” Rene said. “It’s a world class riverwalk.”

Voting in the USA Today poll is “a great opportunity for us to show each other how proud we are about our landscape,” said Lauren Vitacco, who works as a design and marketing coordinator for the Esplanade Association. The Esplanade is the only river side park in Massachusetts in the running. “We provide a lot of greenspace and free activities year round.”

George Munger teaches rowing on the Charles River and is on the Esplanade almost every day with his dogs, Frankie and Sully. “It’s one of my favorite things about the city,” he said. “Definitely, I’ll vote.”
