In spite of near unanimous opposition by local elected officials, business owners and residents near Mass/Cass, Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration is plowing ahead with plans to use an empty motel in the area to house up to 60 addicts.

The Roundhouse Hotel at 891 Mass Ave is being billed as a “temporary site administered by Boston Medical Center” that will have round-the-clock staff and case management. There will be on-site stabilization services to support and transition patients into permanent housing.

Asked to define “temporary” at an on-background meeting with the press prior to the Mayor’s formal announcement, neither Wu nor her advisory team would give a specific timeline.

“The building’s owner is demanding a two-year lease,” noted a Wu advisor. “Nothing has been signed yet and negotiations are still in progress.”

Wu had promised at a Monday virtual meeting sponsored by the South End Forum that she would be releasing a comprehensive plan to address the Mass/Cass drug epidemic. At that time, she mentioned using Roadhouse and the Shattuck Hospital campus.

On Wednesday the Mayor announced an additional 41 beds in Mission Hill at the EnVision Hotel.
